My first encounter with Graceview Courtyard while driving a cab. An elderly passenger got in and gave me the address. As I approached the campus, I told him that I had watched this building being built and had wondered what it was. He remarked that it was a rent-adjusted senior community and that it was “friendly and homey.” I mentioned it looked like a welcoming campus, even with the construction. He said that the second building, currently under construction, was about six months from being finished, and that maybe I might like to put in an application, since the process was extensive.
I thanked him and sat there for a few minutes contemplating what he had said. I had been living in a motel for over ten years and had never considered moving because of expense, lack of motivation, and acceptance of my circumstances. Over the course of a few days, I asked God to lead me toward an answer. The answer came in the form of new management and a list of changes that would have caused more hardship than I was willing to endure.
I called Graceview, spoke to Mary, and set up an appointment. When I arrived, there were residents sitting outside talking and laughing, which was a good sign. I saw that it was a secured building, which was a plus in my eyes. Mary and I talked, and I met Haley at that time also. They were professional, friendly, and knowledgeable, and they did not have an air of snootiness that other places gave off.
Mary then showed me an apartment. I walked in and felt a sense of calm, excitement, and relief that had been missing from my life. I started the paperwork process that moment, got on the wait list, and did not look back. That was December 2022.
In March 2023, I received a call that I was approved. I was ecstatic. I arrived, saw the apartment, filled out additional paperwork, and started packing. I moved in May 2023.
Since I have been here, nearly three years, I can say with certainty that this decision has been my best. The U-shaped layout of the efficiency apartment is perfect for my needs. I have a full kitchen so I can cook and bake not only for myself, but for the community. I have a washer and dryer in the apartment, which is a bonus. I have a view of a courtyard that is very well maintained. I also have a trash room on my floor, and the on-site maintenance dumps three times a week.
I have central heat and air, which helps with my medical conditions, along with tight window seals so there are no drafts. From the beginning, my neighbors have been friendly, courteous, and not noisy. There is a sense of peace knowing that people watch out for each other. We have grown to know one another, and friendships have developed.
We have group events like Wii bowling, shuffleboard, and bingo. We also have potlucks, craft shows, charity events, and more. Groups like the Hospitality Group recognize birthdays, passings, anniversaries, and get-well wishes. Individuals also lead craft classes and discussion groups.
I would be remiss if I did not give kudos to the staff of Graceview Courtyard. They are as much a part of the community as the residents. They keep the campus secure, clean, and safe, while handling administrative duties. They organize outings, informational and health clinics, demonstrations, and resident meetings to see what we need or would like to see going forward. Pastoral and maintenance staff give residents a feeling of care and service that shows we matter.
This is why Graceview Courtyard will be my forever home, made possible through the programs that support affordable senior housing.
