Iowa is evaluating how nuclear energy could complement the state’s diverse energy portfolio — currently anchored by significant wind generation and supported by coal, natural gas, solar and hydroelectric power. Recognized as a national leader in renewable energy production, Iowa continues to assess emerging technologies to ensure a reliable, affordable and resilient energy system.

Iowa does not currently have nuclear generation. As energy demand evolves, the state is examining the feasibility of nuclear energy as part of its long-term energy strategy.

On January 5, 2026, Gov. Kim Reynolds signed Executive Order 17 establishing the Iowa Nuclear Energy Task Force. The task force is charged with evaluating nuclear energy technologies, regulatory and infrastructure considerations, workforce and supply chain readiness, and the potential role of nuclear energy within Iowa’s broader energy portfolio.
