Like many women her age, Joanne is an empty nester who worked hard throughout her life and looked forward to her golden years of retirement. Joanne and her husband, Bill, lived in a two-story Victorian home they had lovingly restored over many years and deeply cherished. Unfortunately, after Bill experienced a serious medical condition that required the amputation of a limb, their multi-story home was no longer practical.
Joanne became Bill’s primary caregiver, and managing the large house grew increasingly difficult. “I never thought I would be here or that I would need something like this when I was younger,” Joanne explains. After careful consideration, Joanne and Bill decided that independent living would be the best option for their future.
Their search led them to Graceview Courtyard II. Located on the edge of Council Bluffs, Graceview Courtyard II sits among the rolling scenery of the Loess Hills. The community offers a quiet, peaceful neighborhood while remaining just a short drive from city amenities, including grocery stores, retail shopping, dining, and medical facilities.
Developed by Immanuel Health Systems, Inc. and 3 Diamond Development LLC, Graceview Courtyard II is a newly constructed, three-story elevator building designed to provide affordable housing for adults age 55 and older. The building features ADA-compliant apartments with grab bars, shower curtains, lower cabinetry, and knee space to accommodate wheelchairs.
Security and safety were among the most important considerations for Joanne and Bill. “It’s difficult to be a caregiver—I had no idea,” Joanne shares. “I feel safer taking care of Bill here. I wouldn’t want to be doing this in our old house now.”
After losing Bill, Joanne values the strong sense of community Graceview Courtyard provides. “The luxury of being around people and forming friendships means so much to me,” she says appreciatively. “It keeps me happy at this stage of my life instead of sitting alone in a house.”
Residents enjoy a variety of monthly activities, including bingo, Sunday evening movies, takeout dinners from local restaurants, crafts that double as community service projects, and weekly church services. Participation is always optional, allowing residents to engage as much or as little as they wish.
“It’s just been wonderful. Everyone here is so kind, and they’re here if I need help,” Joanne says.
Graceview Courtyard II was made possible for Joanne and other seniors through the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program and was funded through MHEG Fund 55, LP. As Joanne puts it, “We need a lot more of these affordable communities everywhere.”
