I am one of many residents at Graceview Courtyard in Council Bluffs. It is the best home I have ever had. I moved in on March 1, 2020—the very week COVID hit. I am the resident who has lived here the longest, coming up on six years.
Before moving here, I lived in older apartments for nearly forty years. They lacked many modern conveniences. Now I have a washer and dryer in my apartment—no more trips to the laundromat. I also have an ice maker, dishwasher, and garbage disposal, things I had never had before. It is wonderful.
The security in our building is the best I have ever experienced. Our apartments have fire doors with deadlocks. In my previous apartments, you could practically punch your hand through the doors. At Graceview Courtyard, we also have strong exterior security. Being in a newer building, we have sprinklers throughout, which gives me great peace of mind.
Graceview Courtyard shows how affordable housing can truly improve quality of life. Because my rent is affordable, I can live in a safe, modern apartment without having to choose between housing and other basic needs like food, healthcare, or transportation. This community proves that affordable housing does not have to mean poor quality. It allows residents to live with dignity, remain independent, and age in place. Developments like this strengthen the entire community by providing stability, safety, and pride in where we live.
I have also made many new friends here. We play various board and card games several times a week, which helps keep our minds active. I plan and direct crafts each month, and together we have made more than 1,000 greeting cards that are sent to our soldiers. Another community project includes knitting hats and scarves for those in need.
My sister in Des Moines once told me, “You deserve this apartment.” I am truly thankful to be living at Graceview Courtyard.
