July 25, 2025 (DES MOINES, IA) — The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) today announced that $6,177,995 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds have been awarded to 14 Iowa communities to support critical water and sewer infrastructure projects.

Grant recipients are: Birmingham, Boone, Castana, Eagle Grove, Elgin, Farmington, Goose Lake, Hastings, Holy Cross, Larrabee, Laurel, Little Sioux, Randolph and Templeton.

“These investments help ease the financial burden for communities needing to upgrade aging systems,” said Debi Durham, director of IEDA and the Iowa Finance Authority. “Clean, safe water is essential — not just for public health, but for keeping our local economies strong. We’re proud to work alongside local leaders to make sure these improvements serve Iowans today and for years to come.”

The CDBG program is federally funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and administered by IEDA for Iowa’s non-metropolitan areas. The program assists communities with a variety of infrastructure needs, including improvements to drinking water sources, distribution systems, wastewater collection and treatment, and other public infrastructure.

IEDA received 22 applications requesting a total of $10,177,995 in this funding round. Awards are based on project impact, benefit to low- and moderate-income residents, financial need, local commitment and project readiness.

In 2025, IEDA was allocated about $10 million for CDBG water and sewer grants. A second application round is open now, with submissions due by September 1.
