When applying for CLG status, the commission assembles the following application packet, consisting of:
- A letter from the chief elected official (mayor or chair, board of supervisors) requesting Certified Local Government status. The letter must be on official stationery and directed to CLG Coordinator, Iowa State Historic Preservation Office.
- A copy of the historic preservation ordinance or resolution.
- A list of commission members with their name, address, phone number, email address, and term of appointment (e.g., July 1, 2025, to July 1, 2028).
- The names of the Commission’s Chairperson, Vice Chair, and Secretary.
- The names and contact information for the staff liaison. .
- The application information including a signed biographical sketch or resume that each commissioner submitted to the local government when they applied for positions on the commission.
- If there are no preservation professionals on the commission, the chief elected official should send a disclaimer letter.
- A copy of the historic property inventory.
- A copy of the commission's historic preservation plan.
Following the review of the submitted application materials the SHPO will send the chief elected official of the local government the CLG Agreement for signature.
