Properties nominated for the National Register of Historic Places are initially submitted to the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) for initial review. After the nomination is passed by SHPO, it is submitted to the State Nominations Review Committee (SNRC).
SNRC members serve as a peer-reviewed body of Iowa professionals in the fields of history, architecture, architectural history and archaeology that help determine if a nomination is worthy of recommendation to the National Park Service for listing. In total, there are 14 SNRC members. Twelve are voting members that serve three-year terms and two are non-voting members that are representatives from two statewide history and preservation organizations. Committee members individually review each nomination, noting any changes in content that need to be made and request clarifications.
Committee Meetings
Committee meetings are open to the public and held three times per year on the second Friday of February, June and October. At these meetings, nomination preparers present each nomination and SNRC members have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback. If the nomination is approved by the SNRC, it is submitted to the National Park Service for final review and listing. The final review and approval of a nomination rests with the National Park Service.
