IEDA's Certified Site program launched in 2012 and continues to be one of the most robust and effective certification programs in the nation. It is responsible for Iowa's recognition as a top 10 state for site readiness by Area Development magazine. Created to address a lack of project-ready industrial sites in the state, communities within the state have now seen more than $2.2 billion in capital investment on certified sites.
Certification indicates the site meets or exceeds nationally recognized standards — including transportation and utility infrastructure — and assures business prospects that due diligence has been completed, reducing risk to companies.
Certification Benefits
- A community is prepared for both proactive and reactive marketing with effective materials (report, maps, flyer, etc.).
- Reliable, vetted information reduces risks that could derail a project.
- Project-ready sites make it easier for a business to locate or expand.
- The property and community are ready to rapidly support industrial prospects.
- Active certified sites are eligible for Revitalize Iowa's Sound Economy (RISE) grant funding.
The new Iowa Rural Certified Site Initiative (IRCSI) was created during the 2024 legislative session to facilitate the development of shovel-ready locations in rural Iowa. The grant program allocates a total of $300,000 in awards to eligible applicants.
